No two people are the same. A very commonly heard phrase, but why aren’t two people the same. Aren’t we
all humans with flesh and blood that has taken birth in this world, grown through various stages of life
from a baby to an adult? Yes, we are, but the circumstances a person lives through, starting from the
circumstances he is born into to the multitude of experiences one lives through are not the exact same as
another.
The truth is that starting from the form we have chosen to be born as, to each and every experience we
live through in that form are all predetermined before we are born. Nothing is an accident or coincidence,
everything happens because of reasons. Every single experience one goes through is an act of exhaustion of
his past karma. To understand this concept, one has to first come to the conviction of the fact that we
are not just the physical body we identify ourselves as and what exists beyond the body. It is not the
body experiencing but that what is beyond the body is what experiences everything.
We do not say I am the leg and I am paining but instead we say “I” have a leg and “my” leg is paining. We
subconsciously refer to us as something beyond the body without realising or being conscious of it. We are
conscious of us being present here as this body, but we are not conscious of anything beyond our body. You
are conscious of your eyes reading this. You are not conscious of a SELF within the body that is in fact
reading this using the eye.
Without the SELF or the life within, our body would be a dead body. The body drops down as a dead body
when the SELF leaves the body. So, you are the Self existing in this human body for a temporary period
before you choose to leave it. It is possible that you left another body before you chose this body and
this form of a human. This has been happening eternally and we cannot give it a starting point or the
number of forms we would have passed through until we finally took this current form.
Through the millions of forms we would have lived through, we have lived through an ocean of experiences,
and each of our thought, word and action in each of these lives has left a karmic impression. All these
impressions have been accumulated and these in turn creates something called tendencies. These tendencies
have to be exhausted and we continue to take new births to exhaust them and thus this cycle of birth and
death continues forever. The tendencies from the past karmas is what creates new experiences for us and we
continue to accumulate new impressions by performing these karmas, which then leads to new tendencies and
new births.
All the experiences one has to experience in a lifetime have been carved out, scripted and destined. One’s
character, behaviour, urges, inclinations, interests and the thoughts that lead one to all these are
influenced by his tendencies. These tendencies are the regulator of something within us called gunas. We
are made up of 3 types of gunas in varying measures – satvic, rajasic and tamasic. The combination of
these gunas is what determines the way we conduct our life.
Uniqueness of each being is dependent on various factors, primary of them being the gunas. The gunas
influence how we think, speak, behave and act, the consequence of which results in our state of mind. A
righteous man thinks and walks the path of righteousness in spite of the influences and compulsions from
his environment. Similarly, the opposite of it, a non-righteous person will always choose the path of
crookedness and selfishness. What leads them to these thoughts and actions are the measure of each guna in
them.
The society uses laws to align everyone to one common way of life and primarily uses the law enforcement
authority and religion as the two primary institutions to enforce this. Thus, from the time of birth,
every individual is conditioned by the Dos and Don’ts to follow in life by the religion as well as by the
law.
However, it is only our awareness of the very fact that we are all different and unique that can lead us
towards the path of seeking and learning the truth and reasoning behind it. This subsequently leads us to
the the science of regulating our gunas through various practices and processes, the secret that leads us
to refinement, making us a better person.
